The beginner may ask himself quite soon for what forms are useful.
Let us compare the education of a kung fu-school with the one of a normal school. At a normal school the student learns the alphabet first , at a kung fu-school basic stances and basic punches and blocks are taught first . At a normal school he learns to write single words next , at a kung fu-school the basic techniques follow. The next step at normal schools may be the writing of simple sentences and short texts. At a kung Fu school the first forms are practiced now . In both schools it is very important to do exactly what the teacher tells his student.
Later when the education is completed the student should be able to write own texts or even poetry, in all martial arts the practitioner should be able to use what he has learned in free fighting without any problem.
This comparison can be used for hand-forms as well as for weapon-forms.
The links below leads you to examples of hand- and weapon-forms.
Of course these examples shall only give you a small impression of forms. The pictures and videos are not useful for learning the forms!
