If any of you is of the opinion that self-defense and a fight during a competition are the same you should ask yourself if the "rules" in a defense-situation are the same as in a competition. I think you will come to the conclusion that we need a completely different preparation and attitude for a real self-defense than for a competition-fight in which we are protected by rules and referees.
This is the reason why in Sifu Quade´s groups different types of fighting are trained. Of course here you will get only a general idea about these methods.
It will be clear for everybody that the difference between the three methods is very fundamental.
In this category the
students and especially the beginners will practise the first basic
fighting-principals like the sense for distance and the reflexes besides
simple techniques (following
certain competition-rules). The danger to be hurt is
quite small because the students practise with low power and with
protective equipments. In this category the skills of high kicks and
low sweeping movements are also trained. In this category the
medium advanced students practise the typical mantis-techniques with
different partners. Fighting-gloves are not used because they would
prevent the mantis-grabbing methods. Here the students also train the
"Yong Fa" (application of the forms) Now the advanced
students will train skills like Chin Na (e.g.joint locking),
throwing-methods, holding-methods and the fighting on the ground. Of
course those students may practise these methods who are aware of the
danger for themselves and their partners. The risk to be hurt is quite
high.
