(”Seven – Star Mantis
Fist")
by Grandmaster ZHONG LIAN
BAO
Wu Shu emerged in China and belongs to the world. It is the fruit of the eastern culture and civilization. In China Wu Shu has a long history. It is a traditional Chinese discipline of attacking and defending. This contains sequences of techniques, which represents a certain fighting spirit.
TANG LANG QUAN is the jewel in the treasure
vault of the Chinese Wu Shu. In the course of it´s origin and further
development the advantages of the old Chinese culture were taken in fully.
The laborious work of the masters, who
developed TANG LANG QUAN, have assumed also therein figure.
During the period "Wu Di" in the
"Liang"-Dynastie Wu Shu - masters from all over came together at the Shaolin -
Temple. Also WANG LANG was invited to teach TANG LANG there. After three
years in the Shaolin - Temple he withdrew from the worl. Outside the temple this
art was not taught lightly.
In
the prime of the Shaolin Wu Shu Eighteen styles were systematized by FUJI CHANSHI (honorary title for
a Buddhist monk). TANG LANG QUAN belonged to them with sixteen sequences (the
so-called "Puogu Da", "Fanche Da", "Tang Lang
Da" und "Jiu Zhuan Shiba Die").
FUJI CHANSHI handed over TANG LANG QUAN
to SHENG XIAO Daoren who was the abbot of the Yunhua - Temple in the Lu -
community, northwest Cha - circle, province Shandong. He brought this art to the
people. Among other things he wrote
a book over the style. Therein the eighteen parts of the "Luohan Neigong"
(exercise for the strengthening of the internal organs) were described. Each
part contains four to five sequences (altogether 69 sequences). Pictures were
drawn according to the postures, as well as 69 “Memory” – rhymes were written.
That was the oldest and most complete book about Shaolin Neigong.
The Shaolin - Temple was put on fire for some
times. The monks fled and later they disclosed the art to the people.
Unfortunately some branches of the style got lost because of unavailable notes.
TANG LANG QUAN is divided in three vocational
schools, namely "Qi Xing TANG LANG" (=Seven - Star Mantis), "Taiji Meihua TANG
LANG" (=Plumblossom - Mantis) and "Liuhe – TANG LANG" (= 6 - Harmony
Mantis).
The founder of the “QI XING TANG LANG
QUAN" was LI ZHI ZHAN, who came from the Li Jia (=Li - family)-village,
Cui Jia - community in the Ping You - circle. During "Daoguang" period in the
"Qing"-Dynastie he learned TANG LANG QUAN from a Xiake (in old times this was an
courteously dealing person experienced in the martial arts). Later he founded an
office for armed guardians in Jinan. Everywhere LI ZHI ZHAN enjoyed a
reputation as Shan Dian Shou (=Flashhand) and Kuai Shou (=Fast hand). Later he
returned home.
In the
thirteenth year of the “Guangxu" period he taught TANG LANG QUAN to WANG YUN SHENG,
who came from Yantai,. After a long and intense training WANG developed
the style to an unique martial art. The characteristics of the style were called
then:
- Organs
and bodies are steeled
- the hard
and the soft complete themselves
- the
techniques are fast and changeable
- the
movements are succinctly.
WANG YUN
SHENG´s student was FAN XU
DONG from Yantai. FAN´s five students were in turn: Guo Jia Lu (from
Laiyang), Yang Wei Xin (from Penglai), LIN JING SHAN (from
Laiyang),LUO GUANG YU (from Penglai) and Wu Chuan Yi (from
Yantai).
Founder of
the Meihua Tang Lang was Li Bin Xiao from Haiji, Xiaochi mountains.
During the “Qian long" period in the “Qing"-Dynastie he had saved a robber´s
life. The robber taught him the knowledge of the style and disappeared later.
After the notes of the Laiyang - circle this art was passed on from Li Bin
Xiao to Zhao Zhu, then
to Liang Xue Xiang and from him to Jiang Hua Long.
Liuhe Tang
Lang Quan was founded by master Wei in the last years of the
“Qing"-Dynastie in the Huang - circle and has a shorter history.
According
to the Chinese tradition only certain technical details of the styles were
passed on, however not all notes of the origin. Thus unfortunately a complete
historical note is not available. Here I only transmit the few, which I know. If
there is something unsuitable, please do not hesitate to criticize.
